Mardi Gras party joy in Queensland LGBTIQ aged care facility

Must read

Arcare Parkwood, a Queensland LGBTIQ+ accredited aged care residence, has brought Sydney Mardi Gras celebrations to its residents this week, according to qnews.com.au.

Staff decorated the residence with rainbow colours and flags as part of the celebrations, along with two hours of live performances and trivia, bringing a much needed lift for residents following a difficult 12 months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many residents got into the spirit of festivities by wearing their best Mardi Gras costumes, as part of a ‘best dressed’ competition.

To a rousing cheer, 95-year-old resident Mary Johnson won with her pink wig, white bedazzled cap and feather boa.

“At 95 years old, you’ve just got to have fun and we certainly know how to celebrate here,” she told qnews.com.au.

Arcare Parkwood Lifestyle Coordinator Tadeja Krajnc said the residents “love any excuse to have a party.”

“It was a great turnout at our second Mardi Gras,” she told reporter Jordan Hirst.

“Our Arcare Parkwood residents and team members really enjoyed seeing the glitz and glamour at the residence.

“We will have to start thinking about how we can make next year’s Mardi Gras even bigger and better.”

Arcare Parkwood opened its doors in late 2019, aiming to provide a groundbreaking level of support to Queensland LGBTIQ elders.

Arcare Parkwood’s globally acknowledged Relationship-First Approach recognises the value of the interdependent relationships between residents, clients, employees, volunteers and family members.

Central to this approach, the residence’s website says, is ‘a holistic philosophy that shifts from mainstream ideation surrounding ageing, to a celebration of longevity through nurturing the mind, body and spirit’.

Located in Parkwood in the Gold Coast hinterland, the residence offers 90 five-star suites, with other facilities including a wellbeing centre, theatre, hair salon, private dining, activity and entertaining areas, and 24/7 nursing care.
